“She won’t stop screaming,” Nakel says–one of the few men in my service who’s not afraid, who speaks his mind and couldn’t care less if I have my blaster aimed at his temple. “Atara hasn’t eaten or done anything but harm herself, send you video messages,” he adds, and all I can think about is how she’s begged for her release and bled for me on that com screen for the last three days. “You need to let her out. Rapha won’t ask, he knows better, but I.” Nakel points to his chest. “Have nothing to lose if you kill me.”

“Any concerns Rapha has, he can bring to me himself. And you’re right, you are nothing and would not be missed.”

“Just let the woman go, Tabbris.”

“She stays where she is.” Exhaling, I power down my weapon and return it to its holster at my side. There’s no need for Atara to be anywhere else. “The search for Ziven isn’t going well and she’d be a distraction.”

“A distraction? Has a woman finally caught Saint Tabbris’ eye?” The mirth in his tone, and the way his face relaxes has me on edge. Without his hood, Nakel’s golden skin is so bright it’s almost glowing, dulling his earthly gray-green eyes. I allow him this as we drink and socialize like old friends.

How dare he assume I’d allow anyone to get in the way of my ambitions. How dare he think Atara’s isolation is due to my lack of understanding of being half Engelus, to have another who could possibly understand the constant battle raging inside.

“You want that pretty golden head of yours splattered across that wall?” I ask as he sits in the chair across from me, slouched and comfortable. Would he be as relaxed if he knew I was only a breath away from ending his life? I won't, but I could.

“Why is she locked away, Tabs?”

“Truth is,” I draw out as I pick up my glass of Earth-style liquor and swirl it around the glass. “She’s a danger to the mission.”

“Because she’s half Human?”

I don’t even blink before the dagger flies and lands with a slick thud into Nakel’s shoulder. He curses and stands, looking at the plasma blade buried into his skin, the smell of burnt flesh signaling the blade is still on.

“Who told you?” I ask, my pulse thumping, echoing in my head. If it was the doctor, I'll kill him.

“Rapha, and goddammit, Tabbris, these were new.” He yanks the blade from his shoulder, which, lucky for him, has been cauterized. Pity, I do love it when my victims bleed. “He was worried that if they ran tests on Atara, you would find out. We never imagined you’d flip like you did, or that you’d only lock one of them up. You know they’re twins, right?” he asks while wiping bits of singed fabric away and examining his closed wound.

Of course I do, but the thought of Rapha being half Human also never crossed my mind. It makes sense, but really, it never mattered.
